With half-term fast approaching, we’ve selected our five top easy-access getaways for all the family. Flying privately not only allows you to travel when you want to, it can also be surprisingly cost-effective sharing with a larger group – so jump on board and jet off to a half-term adventure!

Belize

From exploring the birthplace of Mayan culture, to kayaking alongside sea turtles, Belize has something for the whole family.

As the only country in Central America that claims English as its official language, communication is easy in Belize – as is the pace of life. Highly regarded for its biodiversity and distinctive ecosystems, visitors are encouraged to explore the interior of this Commonwealth realm and can do so via a number of short-hop local airlines. Once ensconced in the rainforest, one can expect to spot black orchids, towering mahogany trees, toucans and tapirs, in addition to stumbling across ancient Mayan ruins. However, if relaxing on a palm-backed Caribbean beach is more your idea of fun, then Belize offers up over 240 miles of coastline and 200 offshore islands to explore or simply admire from the beach.

Florida

In addition to hosting some of the world’s finest theme parks, the Sunshine State offers some fairly quirky family activities involving cowboys, alligators and surf machines…

Explore your inner John Wayne at Creek Ranch – a 1,400 acre working cattle spread that welcomes guests to partake in lasso lessons, archery and trap-shooting, as well as driving a 400-strong herd for those with experience in the saddle. Further south is the Everglades National Park, the largest subtropical wilderness in the US. National Geographic magazine recommends that you rent bikes and take the Shark Valley Loop trail, but advises you to watch out for errant alligators. Finally if the lure of the beach is too much, consider the luxury Andalucian style surroundings of the Boca Raton Resort, which offers all-day kids’ activities including a ‘FlowRider’ wave simulator for surf practice and a nightclub for the over-10s, complete with pro DJs and a velvet rope.

Morocco

Beaches, deserts and mountains, alongside culture, history and shopping… Morocco has it all.

If your children have a thirst for knowledge and adventure that matches your desire for winter sun, then Morocco is a great option for everyone this half term. Steeped in thousands of years of history, Morocco offers a huge variety of experiences from exploring the souks and Kasbahs of Marrakech and Fes (accompanied by a local personal shopper with unrivalled bartering skills) to traversing the desert and the snow-capped Atlas mountains by bike, camel or on foot, before camping out under the stars of the Sahara. There are also countless opportunities to relax and soak up the sun on Morocco’s Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines, before returning home both bronzed and refreshed.

Sri Lanka

If golden beaches, verdant highlands, ancient ruins and exotic cuisine float your family’s boat, then Sri Lanka should be high on your list for a half term break.

Lying off the southern tip of India, with temperatures averaging around 30°C, idyllic restorative winter sunshine is a given in Sri Lanka. The tropical island boasts no less than eight Unesco World Heritage Sites, so those looking to seek out the unique flora and fauna amongst the rolling hills, tea plantations and dense jungles will not be disappointed. Yala, Sri Lanka’s second largest national park, is a particular favourite for visitors with children, as leopards, elephants and crocodiles can all be observed from close up in their natural, unspoilt environment. The beaches of Sri Lanka are equally inviting, offering unparalleled opportunities for surfing, diving, snorkelling and even blue whale watching.

Swedish Lapland

For families who love snow but don’t want to take to the slopes this half term, Swedish Lapland offers an unrivalled alternative.

Immersed well within the Arctic Circle, and spanning over a quarter of Sweden’s landmass, Lapland is a haven for winter pursuits. Bring out the arctic explorer in your children by treating them to such activities as as husky safaris, snowmobile treks and ice fishing. What’s more, between the months of September and March the province offers some of the best positions from which to view and photograph the Northern Lights. There are also some pretty incredible places to stay in the region including the world famous Ice Hotel and the simply stunning Treehotel. In the summer months Lapland is known as the land of the midnight sun, but winter is really the finest time to visit this magical and magnificent land.
