Located in China, this 30-year project is VCS certified and reduces greenhouse emissions by converting more than 7,746 hectares of logged forests to protected forests. Project activity includes the improved forestry management (IFM) in 50 parcels spreading over Jinzhu department, Zhaoxie department, Zengtian department, Niutian department, Shipi department, Gongx department; Shipi Harvest-Nuture department and Zhaoxie Harvest-Nuture department.
The project protects and improves the surviving environment, maintains the ecological balance, enhances homeland security, and saves species resources including 1,272 hectares of Chinese fir.
The project area used to be covered by dense primordial forest, where the quantity and biodiversity of wild animals and plants were plentiful. Prior to project implementation, the quantity and biodiversity of wild animals and plants had been reduced due to years of timber harvest.
The project activity contributes to the environment and sustainable development through biodiversity conservation and soil erosion control. All tree species used are native to the region, and a mixed tree species arrangement keeps flora diseases and pests under control. Soil and water erosion is controlled to avoid land degradation in the project, whilst the use of chemical pesticides is reduced and replaced by the initiative’s natural eco-friendly design. Participation of local farmers/communities and companies/farms is active, although on a voluntary basis. Slash and burn site preparation and overall ploughing for soil preparation are not applied under this project.
