Ningxia Shapotou Hydropower Project of Yellow River is a run-of-river hydro power project located in Ningxia of western China. More precisely, it is located in Yellow River, Zhongwei City. The Project Owner is Ningxia Shapotou Water Control Co., Ltd. The region the project is located in is a poverty-stricken minority region, and had a total population of 5.78 million in 2004, of which 819,000 living in poverty, the yar before the project’s inception. The region is a droughty and rainless area.
The total installed capacity is 120.3MW and the electricity supplied to the power grid is 578.022GWh yearly with a power density of 29.48W/m2. The electricity is connected to the Northwest Power Grid (NWPG) via the Ningxia Power Grid. The hydropower station consists of riverbed power station, two canal head power stations in the north and south main canal respectively.
The riverbed power station uses four bulb tubular turbine units, and the unit capacity of the turbines in the riverbed is 29MW. The canal head power station on the north main canal adopts bulb tubular turbine units and the power station on the south main canal adopts tube type water turbine-generator units, with a total installed capacity combined of 4.3MW (respectively 3.1MW+1.2MW). The project could replace partial electricity of NWPG and reduce GHG emission of the grid, dominated by fossil fuel power generation.
