Alicante airport opened as El Altet in 1967, replacing an older aerodrome. A new terminal was constructed in the 1970’s to address a growing number of passengers and the runway was extended in 1980. New office buildings and an operations centre were built in the 1990’s, with 5 air bridges built to facilitate boarding. A new terminal opened in 2011, increasing capacity to up to 20 million passengers per year. The airport was renamed Alicante Elche Airport in 2013.
