History

Aspen Airport was founded in 1946 as a public use gravel landing strip by a privately owned company. A permanent runway was eventually completed in 1957 and was lengthened in 1963. During the 1970’s the airport concentrated on increasing passenger numbers and a new terminal was envisaged and completed in 1976. The runway was further widened and lengthened to accommodate larger passenger jets and the entire terminal area was redeveloped in 1986 and 1987. In 1999, the aircraft parking was increased to accommodate more aircraft parking, particularly for those visiting the area for skiing.
