The airport initially opened in 1939, called Elmdon Airport and was almost immediately requisitioned by the Air Ministry during World War II. After the war, an additional terminal building was built to handle international traffic. A £260 million reconstruction programme commenced in 1997 and more development has occurred since to accommodate growing passenger numbers.
