History

The airport started out in 1917 as a military base but it was also used for some commercial flights including several destinations around Europe. The US Air Force used Bordeaux-Mérignac during World War II, and military activities continued at the airport until the 1960’s, when the introduction of package flights ensured the airports popularity as a commercial base. The airport expanded in the 1980s and 1990s with new terminals being built and a further smaller terminal added in 2010.
