History

Bristol Airport was officially opened in 1930 by Prince George and was one of the first civilian airports in the country. The airport was commandeered by the British Army during the Second World War and transported many statesmen and actors during this time. A battle to return the airport to a civilian airport ensued over the following years and the airport was eventually opened as the official city airport in 1957. The 1980’s saw many developments to the airport. The passenger levels further increased as more carriers became based at the airport, going from 1 million in 1992 to nearly 5 million in 2004.
