History

An airport was originally planned for Budapest prior to the Second World War, but these plans were delayed until 1950, when the first commercial flights travelled from the airport. During the communist days, most flights travelled within the Soviet Union. In 1954 Malév, Hungary’s own airline, was founded and their first flight to the west went to Vienna in 1956. In 1974 the airport reached one million passengers in a year. Due to increased passenger traffic, a new terminal was built in 1985 and another in 1998. Malév went bankrupt in February 2012 and so one of the operating terminals closed, as there was no requirement for 2 terminals with the loss of traffic.
