History

Work started on the airport in 1937 and it was eventually opened in 1939. In 1940, the airport was captured by the German Army. During this time, the runway was extended and concreted. The location of the airport saw it as a strategically important location, and many battles were fought over it. Eventually after the war, the airport was rebuilt and refitted for the Air Force. In the late 1960’s, the airport was converted for commercial use and a terminal building was completed in 1968. In 2014, the main runway was rebuilt and extended to cope with increased demand at the airport.
