History

The airport opened in 1954, under the name of D.F. Malan Airport, replacing Cape Town’s previous airport, Wingfield Aerodrome. In the early 1990’s, the airport was transferred from the state to Airport Company South Africa, and renamed Cape Town International Airport. The airport has seen significant increases in capacity, rising from 6.2 million passengers in 2006, to 10 million in 2016. In preparation for the FIFA World Cup in 2010, the airport was extensively expanded and renovated, including the building of a new terminal. A second runway was completed in 2015.
