The airport opened in 1924, as the regions first airport. During World War II it was seized by the Allies and used by the US Air Force as a military airfield.After the war it was turned back over to civilian use. The airport had outgrown its surroundings by the late 1940s and so a redeveloped Catania Airport opened in 1950. After a period of sustained growth, the airport required further expansion in 1981.
