History

The first plane took off on the airport site in 1913 and in 1939 an airfield was built for the German military. After World War II, the British military took over the airport and expanded it. In 1951 the airport was opened to civilian traffic and during the next decade a new terminal was built. Further expansions took place in the late 1990’s, including a second terminal and a long-distance railway station.
