History

The airport officially opened in 1961 due to demand for an airport in the area. The airport expanded during the 1960’s as more destinations were added and more advanced aircraft arrived and departed. Several amendments to the original terminal building were completed in 1978. A 2 phase expansion of the terminal was completed in 1994 but the building had become old and tired, and was eventually replaced in 2006 by a new terminal building. A new control tower was constructed and completed in 2009. The airport wins regular awards for its customer service.
