History

The airport was originally opened to commercial traffic in 1935. The advent of the Second World War saw its importance as a military base increase. During the German retreat, attempts were made to destroy the airport but were repelled by civil airport employees. The airport was reopened for commercial traffic in 1957. After the reunification of Germany, several European capitals were added as destinations from the airport, which led to a second terminal opening in 1995. The original terminal was replaced in 2001.
