History

The airport opened in 1963, with the first scheduled flight to Glasgow in 1966. The original grass runway was replaced with tarmac in th 1970’s and extended. The current terminal was opened in 1997 by Neil Kinnock. Several new routes were added over the next few years as well as being a base for RAF cadet training.
