History

The airfield began its life as an RAF airfield in 1941 and was home to the Canadian Air Force during World War II. The RAF station was closed in 1963 and put up for sale. The airport was then developed into a civilian airport and the first civil flight took place in 1964. In 2002, the airport sought outside investment to expand and develop the airport and in 2004 a redeveloped terminal was completed. The airport was renamed at this point to Durham Tees Valley Airport as it was thought that people from outside the UK would know of Durham. The airports focus is now more on general/private aviation.
