History

Dusseldorf Airport was opened in 1927. During World War II, civil flights stopped and the airport was taken over by the German military. The airport reopened for civil use in 1948. In 1964 a new terminal was planned and in 1969 the main runway was lengthened. An additional terminal was added in 1973. A third terminal was built in 1986 and by 1992, 12 million passengers were using the airport. A fire in 1996 devastated much of the original airport and so Terminal A and B had to be completely reconstructed. Further enhancements to transport links have happened since.
