History

The first civilian airport in the location was built in 1925 and 3 years later there were regular flights from the airport. Following the crash in 1929, the airport lost significance and was reopened in 1935 as Bindersleben. After the war finished, the airport was taken over by Soviet Allied forces. The airport once again dropped off in terms of passenger numbers and it was only until the reunification of Germany that the airport began to grow again. After this, passenger numbers increased and money was invested in rebuilding and extending the airport.
