The airport opened in 1928 as Orlando Municipal Airport, starting predominantly as an airmail service center. The US Army Air Corps commandeered the airport in 1940 and the airport remained under military control for the next 6 years. In 1946, after the end of the war, the airport was released back to the City of Orlando but with a military presence maintained at the airport. At the same time, passenger flights resumed at the airport and a terminal was built in 1951.
