History

The airport in its current site was opened in 1936, and was the base for airships until The Hindenburg Disaster curtailed their use. The airport was commandeered by the military during World War II and after the war became a base for the US Air Force. In 1951, restrictions were lifted for German air travellers, and civil air traffic started to grow. The airport became a major hub on the building of the terminal building in 1958 and was rebuilt again in 1962 as it was deemed too small. A further terminal and new runways have since been built to expand the airport further.
