History

The airport started out as an RAF base, and was not officially in use until 1936. During the Second World War, the airport acted as a torpedo training base and then was handed over to the Royal Navy in 1943. The airport continued as a Royal Navy base until 1963. In 1966, the airport was moved and completely rebuilt, officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. After previously being restricted to domestic flights due to the prominence of Prestwick Airport, eventually Glasgow was given unrestricted access to international flights and became Glasgow International Airport, with all airlines moving their international flights from Prestwick. The airport was massively redeveloped in 1989 and by 1996 it was the 4th largest airport in the UK. Several extensions have taken place since but Edinburgh airport has overtaken Glasgow as Scotland’s busiest airport.
