It was identified in the 1940’s that the existing airport (Malmi) could not handle the increasing amount of passenger numbers or new heavier aircraft, and so a new site was identified in the city of Vantaa. The airport opened temporarily in 1952 for use during the Summer Olympics held in Helsinki. Regular jet flight operations began in 1959 and a new terminal opened in 1969. The airport was called Seutula Airport initially. The passenger terminal was expanded in 1983 and by 1988 the airport handled 6 million passengers annually. A new terminal for domestic flights was built in 1993 and a new runway was built in 2002. Further redevelopments took place in 2015.
