History

Hong Kong International Airport was designed to replace the former airport commonly known as Kai Tak Airport, which had limited room for expansion. Many possibilities were considered, but eventually the government decided to build a new airport on land in an area called Chek Lap Kok. Construction began in 1991 and the airport opened in 1998. The first foreign visitor to land at the airport was US president Bill Clinton. A second airport terminal opened in 2007, and a second passenger concourse was opened in 2010.
