The original airport at Safdarjung was the main airport for New Delhi until 1962. It had reached capacity and so civilian flights were moved to Palam Airport, which had acted as an RAF base during World War II. As passenger numbers increased at Palam Airport, a new terminal was built and opened in 1986. At this point, the airport was renamed Indira Gandhi International Airport. The old terminal from the original Palam Airport is now used for domestic flights. To handle massive increases in passenger numbers, an additional third terminal was built and opened in 2010.
