History

The airport was built in 1940 as an RAF base to be used during the Second World War, and eventually opened for civil operations in 1947. Several domestic flights ensued within the UK over the following years. The airport also serves as a hub for many of the highlands and islands of Scotland and is used by low-cost carriers for some European flights. The terminal is undergoing expansion to coincide with increased passenger numbers and the reinstatement of a regular flight to Heathrow.
