History

JFK opened in 1947 as Idlewild Airport and started commercial flights in 1948. Expansion plans were soon put in place as the airport became immediately popular. In total, 8 terminals were built following the acquisition of further land. In 1963, the airport was renamed JFK airport after the assassination of the president earlier in that year. Several expansion projects have since occurred, and plans are in the offing to completely redevelop and refurbish the airport, with a date of 2025 aimed for completion.
