History

Construction on the airport began in 1974, but the airport was first opened to the public in 1981. At the same time, a dedicated Hajj terminal was built, specifically used for people travelling to Mecca on pilgrimage. It is thought to be one of the world’s largest air terminals, catering for up to 80,000 travellers at the same time. A 3 stage expansion project commenced in 2006 and completed in 2019, which included a new passenger terminal, a new air traffic control tower, and new lighting and fuel networks. The developments are aimed to transform the airport from an initial figure of 13 million passengers per year up to 80 million.
