The airport first opened in 1927 and was envisaged as a place for the British to stop off on their way to India. The current airport structure opened in 1979. Further expansion and renovation took place between 1999 and 2001, including a terminal expansion. A general aviation terminal was built in 2008, and in 2011, a new terminal was cited for construction to handle growing passenger numbers. Delays have meant that construction did not actually start until 2017 and is not due to be completed until 2022. In the meantime, smaller terminals 4 and 5 opened in 2018.
