History

The airport opened in 1927, serving both domestic and international flights right from its inception. The airport closed to Civilian traffic at the start of the Second World War and much of the airport was destroyed by Allied bombing. DHL moved its European hub to the airport in 2007, significantly increasing cargo flights coming through the airport. The airport was also modernised as part of a bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.
