The airport was originally called Moisant Field. During World War II the land became a government air base. After the war, the airport returned to civilian control and commercial service resumed in 1946. A new terminal was built and opened in 1959. In 1961, the name of the airport changed to New Orleans International Airport. It was considered during the early 1970’s to move the airport to a new site but eventually it was decided to expand the existing airport. In 2001, in commemoration of 100 years since the birth of Louis Armstrong, the airport was renamed after him. Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to the airport, forcing it to close whilst repairs were made.
