Constructed in 1927, Madrid Barajas International Airport was opened to national and international traffic in 1931. The first major terminal (now Terminal 2) opened in 1955. In the 1970s, passenger numbers increased and a new terminal was built to accommodate (now Terminal 1). The 1982 FIFA World Cup brought further expansion to the 2 terminals. Several further expansions happened in the 1990’s and 2000’s, culminating in 4 terminals. Following the death of former Spanish Prime Minister, Adolfo Suárez, in 2014, the airport was renamed to Aeropuerto Adolfo Suárez, Madrid–Barajas.
