History

The airport hosted the first flight exhibitions in 1910 and during the First World War it acted as a military airport to defend against air attacks. During World War II the airport was used extensively by the US Air Force and Air Transport Command used the airport as a hub for cargo, aircraft and personnel for the rest of the war. Commercial traffic started in 1950 and the airport was ran by the local city council until 1997 when it became privatised. In 1995 a new shopping arcade was built in Terminal 1.
