History

The airfield was opened in 1933 as a civilian airport but was commandeered by the Army during the Second World War and called RAF Trebelzue. The airport was then handed to the US Air Force, who built a new control tower and expansion of the runway. Maintenance was undertaken from 1947-1951 and the airport was reopened as a Coastal Command base in 1951. The airport remained a military base until 2008 , when operations ceased. The airport closed in late 2008 in order to meet the needs of civilian aircraft flights. An extension occurred in 2006 to increase the capacity of the terminal and further work was completed in 2008 to accommodate larger passenger numbers.
