Miami-Opa Locka Airport was founded in its current location by flying pioneer Glenn Curtiss in 1925, when he moved the Florida Aviation Camp from Hialeah to land west of Opa Locka. Opa Locka airfield got to be known as the Municipal Blimp Hangar and the Goodyear Blimp began working out of the airfields storage. During the Second World War and through to the early 1960’s, the airport acted as a Naval Reserve base, until it was transferred to county ownership. It was later reserved as base once more during the Cuban Missile Crisis but was not needed. In October 2014, the Miami-Dade County Commission voted to change the name of the airport to "Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport" as part of a rebranding scheme to include the name ‘Miami’ in all Miami based airports. The airport has hosted many famous people including Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez and Michael Jordan.
