History

The site has been used as an airfield since 1920. After significant damage sustained during World War II, the airport was completely rebuilt to accommodate 2 runways and international flights started to use the airport. Oslo Gardermoen Airport was in competition with Oslo’s other Airport, Fornebu, but Fornebu was up to capacity and there was no room for expansion. The local government decided to transform Gardermoen and make it Oslo’s premier airport. The work was completed in 1998, including a high speed train line built to Oslo city centre.
