History

Originally called Son Sant Joan Airport, the first commercial flights took place in 1935 between Palma and Madrid. Up until 1954 the airport was used as a military station and most commercial flights flew to the nearby Son Bonet aerodrome. Due to the influx of tourist traffic, Son Bonet could no longer be expanded to cope, and so plans were put in place to expand Son Sant Joan instead. In 1965, a terminal was built alongside expansions to the runway. Continued growth in the 80s and 90s led to a new terminal being built in 1997.
