History

During the outbreak of World War II, a military airport was required in the Pittsburgh area and so Pittsburgh airfield was soon established. Once the war was over, a commercial terminal was constructed to handle civilian passengers using the airport. In 1952, the airport was finally opened as a passenger airport, and took over from the over-capacity Allegheny County Airport as Pittsburgh’s main airport. It was instantly used by a significant amount of passengers and remains in the US’ top 40 airports.
