The site of the airport was purchased in 1936 but was not fully operational until 1941 due to the low lying land that was prone to flooding. During World War II, the airport was used by the US Army Air Force. A new terminal and a new extended runway were built in 1952. A new terminal was then built again in 1959 and construction of a second runway. The terminal building was renovated and expanded in 1977.
