History

Operations from the airport began in 1937, taking over from Kbely Airport due to insufficient capacity. During the late 1960’s the airport was seized by Soviet paratroopers, facilitating the deployment of troops for the invasion of Czechoslovakia. The airport has seen much expansion and modernisation since this time including a new runway and new terminals built in 1997 and 2006. The original terminal built in 1937 is used for VIP flights and state visits.
