History

The airport opened in 1955 with one runway. A nearby factory was soon turned into a passenger terminal to provide some facilities. In 1961, the runway was extended and in May 1963, the airport was classified as a customs airport. Between 1964 and 1965, a control tower was built, along with extended aircraft parking and the airport was officially named San Sebastian. A new terminal was built in 1968 and the runway further extended in 1969. Up until 1992, the airport was limited to the size of aircraft that could be flown from there, but this was lifted, allowing jet-engine aircraft to use the airport.
