The airport opened in 1955 with one runway. A nearby factory was soon turned into a passenger terminal to provide some facilities. In 1961, the runway was extended and in May 1963, the airport was classified as a customs airport. Between 1964 and 1965, a control tower was built, along with extended aircraft parking and the airport was officially named San Sebastian. A new terminal was built in 1968 and the runway further extended in 1969.
