Following the end of the Second World War, and Norway’s involvement in NATO meant that some strategic air bases were required in the country for refuelling and to access Eastern European targets. The airport eventually opened in 1956 but Norway’s refusal to allow US troops to be permanently stationed there saw interest in the strategic use of the airport dwindle. It was therefore decided that the airport could be used for civilian use and a new terminal building was constructed. Eventually, private investors alongside local government bought a controlling stake in the airport and decided that a new terminal was needed. This was completed in 1991. The end of the Cold War saw the need for Sandefjord as a military base decline and more emphasis has been placed on the airport as a civilian commercial development, including the building of a new international terminal in 2003.
