History

The airport opened in 1955 with a single runway and a small terminal building. By the early 1970’s, the airport could not cope with the amount of passenger traffic and so it was decided to expand the airport. The oil crisis dampened passenger traffic, but when the issue came up again in the late 1970’s, it was decided to relocate the airport to allow for expansion. The first commercial flights took place in 1981 out of the newly built airport. Terminal 2 opened in 1990. A third terminal was completed in 2007. Further expansion projects have since taken place including the building of Terminal 4 in 2017.
