History

The airport began its life as a grass strip used for air mail delivery in 1938. In 1949, the first passenger terminal was built, and the airport became known as Seawell Airport. In 1983, the US formed an agreement with Barbados to expand the airport infrastructure, mainly to use the airport as a base for its involvement in conflict with Grenada and a Regional Security System was and is still based there to provide security for the Eastern Caribbean. The airport was one of the few to accept Concorde flights from the UK. Between 2000 and 2006, a significant expansion project including upgrading of runways and a new terminal. Further expansions have occurred since 2006 as the airport became more and more popular for tourist flights.
