History

The airfield was originally built by the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. Around 1919, the airfield closed and reverted back to farmland.The airport was then reopened in 1935 and was requisitioned once more by the army in 1939 for the start of World War II. The airport was returned to civilian use soon after the war had ended. The airport had made losses for many years and in 1993, the council sold the airport to a private concern who also owned Biggin Hill Airport and the airport was renamed ‘London Southend Airport’, which managed to turn the airport around.After a further takeover in 2008, significant investment took place at the airport and a new terminal opened in 2012.
