The original airport was initiated by First World War pilot Nigel Love, who wanted to open an aircraft manufacturing plant near to the city of Sydney. He established Mascot in 1919. In 1921, the government acquired some land around Mascot to create a public airfield. Once Love’s lease had expired they also acquired his land. The first regular flights began in 1924 and in 1936, the airport was renamed Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport after Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. Work commenced on a new modern terminal in 1966 and opened in 1970. The airport underwent several expansions and renovations before the Olympic Games in 2000. A further renovation occurred in 2010.
