How to choose the perfect ski chalet

How to choose the perfect ski chalet image

More often than not, it’s the small details that make the difference when it comes to your winter ski holiday. Anyone who has travelled with children, extended family or close friends knows your memories are seldom shaped by the physical features and finishes of a property. It is shaped by far more human considerations. How the house works in the morning rush for ski school. Whether there is space to disappear when different generations want different rhythms. How easily the day can unfold without small frictions becoming daily irritations.

Matthew Burnford, founder of MBM Luxury Chalets, has built his business around those finer qualities. Rather than treating chalets as interchangeable assets within a portfolio, he approaches each request as a behavioral brief. Who travels together. How they spend their evenings. Whether the priority is privacy, sociability, or the ability to step away entirely.

For Burnford, choosing the right chalet is less about specification and more about fit. Understanding how people want to live in the mountains, how they use space and how much structure or flexibility they expect from their stay, is what turns a well-appointed house into a genuinely successful holiday

For this article, we posed some questions to Mr Burnford to understand what goes into choosing the perfect ski chalet for the world's most discerning clientele.

1. “I don’t mind paying, but I hate overpaying. What are the signs a chalet is charging purely for postcode rather than substance?”

In the Alps, a prestigious postcode can sometimes mask an uninspiring product and guests end up paying a premium for geography rather than value. The signs are fairly clear once you know what to look for and that’s one of the benefits of working with an operator or agency who knows where the real value lies. We would recommend looking closely at the details: the standard of housekeeping, the quality of amenities, the maintenance, the service – these are the real indicators of substance. True quality is the product of care, discipline and of course, attention to detail. Those are the things that remain at the heart of MBM Chalets’ philosophy.

2. “If I want to lock in something exceptional for next season, what should I be looking at before everyone else catches on?”

As a management company, we also act as ‘eyes on the ground’. We pride ourselves on getting to know our clients personally and can anticipate their requirements, so it becomes easier for us to share tip offs and recommendations. We are always on the look-out for new chalet products to add to the portfolio which meets the high expectations of our discerning clients. At MBM, we treat every home with the same care we give our own, responding to guests with genuine warmth, and refusing to cut corners. We take pride in the fundamentals, from a perfectly made bed and an immaculate home, to a sincere welcome and remembering preferences, because those details are what make a stay truly exceptional.

3. “I want absolute quiet. How do you ensure a chalet is genuinely soundproofed? Photos never show that.”

Soundproofing is a combination of construction quality, altitude and neighbour proximity. The first thing we do is assess the bones of the building: insulation, window quality, layout, and whether the property sits on a quiet lane or a busy piste. The second step is honest disclosure. If a chalet is inherently peaceful, we’ll tell you. If it's not, we’ll also tell you.

Most chalets, like properties in London, are situated relatively close together. Naturally, certain times of the year for example, New Year’s Eve, will be livelier than a quiet Sunday morning! Almost all buildings meet modern construction standards, so you can expect a good level of sound insulation. That said, no one can guarantee absolute silence. If you’re seeking complete tranquillity, simply let us know and we can recommend chalets set apart from others. It’s important to remember, however, that you cannot be both in the heart of the village (and close to the action) and entirely secluded at the same time.

4. “I’ve had mixed experiences with staff. Can I guarantee I’m getting a team that’s discreet and capable?”

We have always hired for emotional intelligence first, because you can teach a task but you can’t teach instinct or that quiet blend of discretion, timing and the ability to read a room. Our team has what we call the ‘hospitality gene’, the sense that they are caring for someone’s home rather than simply servicing a space. This creates staff who are capable, respectful and present, warm when needed and invisible when preferred. That same spirit shapes how we communicate. In a world full of automated replies, we respond personally and promptly because real connection matters.

5. “Which resorts actually protect your anonymity? I don’t want to spend a week being looked at.”

Privacy is an underrated luxury in an age where everything is shared instantly. Locations like La Tzoumaz and certain pockets of the 4 Vallées offer the perfect blend of world-class skiing and genuine privacy. These are places where people come for the mountains, not ‘the scene’. You’re not photographed on the way to the lift and you’re not part of a spectacle. Many of our guests prefer destinations where anonymity is the norm, and we guide them accordingly.

6. “If I bring security or extra staff, can you recommend some chalets that can properly accommodate them without it feeling cramped or awkward?”

Absolutely, we can help with that. The first question is whether you want your staff to stay within the chalet or be accommodated nearby. If you prefer them to live in the same property, you’ll need a chalet with sufficient space, including dedicated bedrooms and, ideally, separate living or dining areas so everyone has privacy and comfort. We can advise you on which chalets are genuinely suitable for that arrangement.

If you’d rather your staff stay close by, the best solution is to rent a separate apartment or chalet where they have their own accommodation and facilities. This often works better for both guests and staff.

7. “Where can I rely on snow without having to chase conditions every morning?”

High-altitude resorts such as Verbier and the 4 Vallées provide consistently reliable conditions, particularly from mid-December onwards.

8. “Ski-in/ski-out is essential for me. Which chalets genuinely have it, and which ones just claim they do?”

“Ski-in/ski-out” can mean very different things depending on the property, so it’s important to understand the specifics. Some chalets allow you to ski out easily but not ski back in. Others offer true ski-in/ski-out access but only when snow and weather conditions are favourable. In some cases, you can reach the piste directly, but it may involve a short cross-country traverse rather than a straightforward downhill glide.

It’s also worth considering alternatives: a chalet right beside a lift station or immediately next to a shuttle stop that takes you to the slopes. For some guests, this is just as convenient but it isn’t technically ski-in/ski-out. The best approach is simply to ask us. We inspect every property personally and can explain exactly how easy it is to get on and off the slopes from each chalet. That way, you get a clear, honest picture of what “ski-in/ski-out” really means for your stay.

9. “I care about the food more than anything. How do you match me with a chef who actually understands what I like?”

Ah, that is where the magic really lies - the personalisation of every stay! We deliberately chose not to lock guests into all-inclusive, fully staffed packages with in-house chefs. Flexibility suits real life far better. One night might be a private chef cooking something extraordinary; the next, a cosy dinner in the village or a bowl of pasta by the fire. With our trusted partners, every stay is curated and shaped around the guests’ particular needs.

Food is one of the most personal parts of a chalet stay, which is why we don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead of fixed in-house chefs or all-inclusive packages, we work with a specialist partner who sources and provides chefs entirely on a bespoke basis.

You simply tell us what you want; your tastes, dietary preferences, favourite cuisines, and the style of dining you enjoy. Our partner then selects the right chef for you, whether that’s a Japanese sashimi specialist, a Michelin-level chef with expertise in Asian cuisine, or someone who excels in classic European fine dining. The choice is completely yours. Once matched, the chef works directly with you to design and refine fully personalised menus, ensuring they understand exactly what you like before your stay begins. This process means you get a chef whose cooking genuinely reflects your tastes, not a generic offering.

10. "We want to rent a chalet for the whole family (2 adults, one teenager and 2 young children) for 10 days. What's your recommendation for the best option that money can buy right now for an unforgettable trip?”

The ideal chalet really depends on your preferred location, budget, and the style of experience you want. The earlier you book, the wider the choice, especially during peak season weeks. For a family of five seeking a truly unforgettable stay, I’d point you to Chalet Janluke. Set in a quiet yet central location in La Tzoumaz in the 4 Vallées, Chalet Janluke has 4 spacious bedrooms with super king-size beds (sleeps 8) and offers privacy without compromise on convenience.

Our approach is highly personalised. We take the time to understand exactly what you want, from family dynamics to desired amenities and lifestyle preferences, and act as a kind of bespoke chalet broker. Once we understand your priorities, we go away, research the best options, and come back to you with a carefully curated selection of properties that could make your stay truly unforgettable.
