“Whatever you do, please do not write an article about this resort,” says Hans-Jürg Buff, standing before a group of journalists in a crisp, modern lobby overlooking Lake Constance, Germany. He pauses long enough to draw a few raised eyebrows, then smiles. “Not unless you truly believe this place is one of a kind.”
It’s an engaging, though disarming start. Buff may have the easy charm of someone seasoned in hospitality, but what comes through more strongly is his directness, his contrarian streak, and his quiet certainty. He built this place from nothing and has no interest in validation. What he’s looking for, it seems, is alignment. Either you see what he’s doing here, or you don’t.
From the outside, Buff Medical Resort could be mistaken for another wellness spa chasing its share of an industry set to reach $1.35 trillion within two years. Step inside, though, and the understatement gives way to something far more exacting. This is not a retreat but a medical clinic with the refinement of a luxury hotel. It is also a family-run venture, invested not in trends but in outcomes.
Hans-Jürg runs six properties under the Swiss Mountain Hotel Group, and has spent a lifetime refining the art of hospitality. But this project, opened in early 2025, carries the weight of personal conviction. Several years ago, when his 82-year-old mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and prescribed 18 pills a day, Buff made a decision to intervene. He stepped in, took control of her care, replaced the pharmaceuticals with a targeted regimen of natural supplements, and he believed this helped extend her life by two years. The experience was transformative.
Buff Medical Resort is his response: a purpose-built destination rooted in personalised, preventive care. There are no gimmicky detox packages, no empty promises of instant rejuvenation. Instead, guests begin with full diagnostic testing, followed by targeted interventions: unrivalled cardiovascular insights, hormone balancing and postural analysis. Each stay is bespoke, and each recommendation is backed by data.
Buff’s language is deliberately provocative. He speaks of the pharmaceutical industry as dependency-driven, and describes Buff’s philosophy as one of independence: “We teach people to take responsibility for their own health. We give them the tools to become self-reliant. Luxury and longevity is not the main event here,” Buff says. “The real luxury is adding life to your years, not years to your life.”
The resort features an in-house cardiac MRI—the latest model nicknamed the ‘Rolls-Royce’—gait and mobility labs, and rooms equipped with adjustable altitude simulation up to 4,500m (the same as the foothills of the Himalayas) to encourage red blood-cell production. On the ground floor of the property sits a golden swimming pool, and at the top of the building sits a bulletproof presidential suite with its own elevator and car park. With Lake Constance just steps away and the Alps rising on the horizon, the resort grounds feel calm and connected to nature.
Nutrition is led by FX Mayr principles, with options ranging from structured fasting to the GourMED menu, where the occasional carb is allowed alongside wild fish and slow-cooked veal. The approach is scientific, but not joyless. Treatments include osteopathy, Ayurveda and biodynamic facials, delivered with rare technical skill.
What becomes clear by the time you leave is that Buff isn’t running another wellness retreat – he’s redefining what healthcare can look like. In a landscape crowded with promises of quick fixes, guests here are given everything they need to take lasting ownership of their wellbeing, and are expected to do so. In a resort that has been carefully and purposefully optimised to stimulate real, lasting change, it is this equal demand for commitment from its guests that truly sets it apart.
