History

The airport opened in 1934 and became an RAF base during the Second World War. After the war a new terminal building was built, and a new control tower to help with the increase of commercial traffic and the nationalisation of the airport in 1947. The discovery of North Sea oil in 1967 turned the airport into an important hub for helicopter operations to and from the oil rigs. Helicopter flights account for half of the movements at the airport and it is the world’s busiest heliport.
