History

The airport was originally constructed in 1941 as an RAF base created on the orders of the Air Ministry to contribute to the war effort. After the war, the airport was abandoned and fell into disuse. Several unexploded bombs remained and the airport was in a poor state, however it was decided that this was the best location for a new airport in South Wales. The new airport was opened in 1952 as Rhoose Airport, and a new terminal building followed shortly afterwards. In 1965, it was handed over to the local council, who in turn started a 5 year plan to install a new control tower, terminal and runway extension. Further developments have taken place in the following years through private investment but the airport has since returned into local authority hands.
